Increased success probability in Hardy's nonlocality: Theory and demonstration
Depending on the way one measures, quantum nonlocality might manifest more
visibly. Using basis transformations and interactions on a particle pair, Hardy
logically argued that any local hidden variable theory leads to a paradox.
Extended from the original work, we introduce a quantum nonlocal scheme for
n-particle systems using two distinct approaches. First, a theoretical model is
derived with analytical results for Hardy's nonlocality conditions and
probability. Second, a quantum simulation using quantum circuits is constructed
that matches very well to the analytical theory. When demonstrated on real
quantum computers for n=3, we obtain reasonable results compared to theory.
Even at macroscopic scales as n grows, the success probability asymptotes
15.6%, which is stronger than previous results.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
FedMEKT: Distillation-based Embedding Knowledge Transfer for Multimodal Federated Learning
Federated learning (FL) enables a decentralized machine learning paradigm for
multiple clients to collaboratively train a generalized global model without
sharing their private data. Most existing works simply propose typical FL
systems for single-modal data, thus limiting its potential on exploiting
valuable multimodal data for future personalized applications. Furthermore, the
majority of FL approaches still rely on the labeled data at the client side,
which is limited in real-world applications due to the inability of
self-annotation from users. In light of these limitations, we propose a novel
multimodal FL framework that employs a semi-supervised learning approach to
leverage the representations from different modalities. Bringing this concept
into a system, we develop a distillation-based multimodal embedding knowledge
transfer mechanism, namely FedMEKT, which allows the server and clients to
exchange the joint knowledge of their learning models extracted from a small
multimodal proxy dataset. Our FedMEKT iteratively updates the generalized
global encoders with the joint embedding knowledge from the participating
clients. Thereby, to address the modality discrepancy and labeled data
constraint in existing FL systems, our proposed FedMEKT comprises local
multimodal autoencoder learning, generalized multimodal autoencoder
construction, and generalized classifier learning. Through extensive
experiments on three multimodal human activity recognition datasets, we
demonstrate that FedMEKT achieves superior global encoder performance on linear
evaluation and guarantees user privacy for personal data and model parameters
while demanding less communication cost than other baselines

Multimorbidity and its social determinants among older people in southern provinces, Vietnam
Background: Developing countries are poorly equipped for health issues related to ageing populations making multimorbidity challenging. As in Vietnam the focus tends to be on single conditions. Hence little is known about burden of multimorbidity. This study aimed to examine the prevalence and the determinants of multimorbidity among older people in Southern Vietnam. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two provinces of Southern Vietnam with a sample of 2400 people aged 60 years and older. The presence of chronic disease was ascertained by medical examination done by physicians at commune health stations. Information on social and demographic factors was collected using structured questionnaire. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to examine the factors associated with multimorbidity. Results: Nearly 40 % of older people had multimorbidity. Currently not working, and healthcare utilisation were associated with higher prevalence of multimorbidity. Living in urban areas and being literate were associated with lower prevalence of multimorbidity. Conclusion: The study found a high burden of multimorbidity among illiterate, especially those living in rural areas. This highlights the need for targeted community based programs aimed at reducing the burden of chronic disease
Enhanced Near-Infrared Fluorescent Sensing Using Metal-Dielectric-Metal Plasmonic Array
This work presents a numerical study of metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) plasmonic structure used to enhance a near-infrared fluorescent sensor. The MDM plasmonic structure consists of silver (Ag) subwavelength disk arrays on a thin silica (SiO2) spacing layer and 100-nm-thick-Ag film on a silicon (Si) substrate. The MDM plasmonic arrays with various structural parameters are designed and numerically investigated using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Results show that the optical properties of designed structures are slightly dependent on the height of the Ag disk and strongly dependent on the Ag disk diameter and SiO2 thickness. In the near-infrared wavelength range, the proposed MDM plasmonic array has low ohmic loss and shows the high fluorescent emitting enhancement and directivity of about 16 times and 625.0, respectively, thus making MDM plasmonic array an alternative approach for near-infrared fluorescence bioimaging and biosensing devices
Gravitational Waves From Known Pulsars: Results From The Initial Detector Era
We present the results of searches for gravitational waves from a large selection of pulsars using data from the most recent science runs (S6, VSR2 and VSR4) of the initial generation of interferometric gravitational wave detectors LIGO (Laser Interferometric Gravitational-wave Observatory) and Virgo. We do not see evidence for gravitational wave emission from any of the targeted sources but produce upper limits on the emission amplitude. We highlight the results from seven young pulsars with large spin-down luminosities. We reach within a factor of five of the canonical spin-down limit for all seven of these, whilst for the Crab and Vela pulsars we further surpass their spin-down limits. We present new or updated limits for 172 other pulsars (including both young and millisecond pulsars). Now that the detectors are undergoing major upgrades, and, for completeness, we bring together all of the most up-to-date results from all pulsars searched for during the operations of the first-generation LIGO, Virgo and GEO600 detectors. Molecular epidemiology of avian influenza viruses circulating among healthy poultry flocks in farms in northern Vietnam.
Repeated epizootics of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus subtype H5N1 were reported from 2003 to 2005 among poultry in Vietnam. More than 200 million birds were killed to control the spread of the disease. Human cases of H5N1 infection have been sporadically reported in an area where repeated H5N1 outbreaks among birds had occurred. Subtype H5N1 strains are established as endemic among poultry in Vietnam, however, insights into how avian influenza viruses including the H5N1 subtype are maintained in endemic areas is not clear. In order to determine the prevalence of different avian influenza viruses (AIVs), including H5N1 circulating among poultry in northern Vietnam, surveillance was conducted during the years 2006-2009. A subtype H5N1 strain was isolated from an apparently healthy duck reared on a farm in northern Vietnam in 2008 and was identified as an HPAI. Although only one H5N1 virus was isolated, it supports the view that healthy domestic ducks play a pivotal role in maintaining and transmitting H5N1 viruses which cause disease outbreaks in northern Vietnam. In addition, a total of 26 AIVs with low pathogenicity were isolated from poultry and phylogenetic analysis of all the eight gene segments revealed their diverse genetical backgrounds, implying that reassortments have occurred frequently among strains in northern Vietnam.
